Staying In London

By: Arthor Pens

London is the perfect city for both historical sight-seeing and contemporary leisure activities. As the capital of the United Kingdom, it proudly boasts a wealth of architecture denoting the styles of bygone eras and their respective monarchies. The oldest building in London is said to be a church called All Hallows by the Tower, founded in the Saxon time of 675. It's close proximity to The Tower of London meant that many of the beheaded prisoners of the Tower found a temporary burial place there.

Along the Thames you'll find more homage to old London in the form of Shakespeare's Globe theater; a remarkable reconstruction of the original theater that housed the Bard's plays from 1599 until it was destroyed by fire in 1613.

In complete contrast to this is the London Eye; a stunning feat of design and engineering that awards its visitors a completely unique and unrivalled vista of London in all its glory. From it you can look down upon Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament or let your eye wander down the River Thames taking in St Paul's and simply enjoy the unparalleled experience of viewing London in panoramic style from the sky.

When your feet are back on the ground you may wish to spend some of your sterling and Oxford Street is the Mecca for high-street offerings. Here you will find almost all the 'names' in clothes, shoes and anything else you desire. If this is simply not enough for you, Harrods in Knightsbridge reportedly has everything a person could wish for and if it doesn't it will pledge to get it for you.

London is not the most inexpensive of cities and hotel prices reflect this. If you are considering a visit why not think about renting an apartment instead of staying in a hotel. One major benefit to taking an apartment is the luxury of having a kitchen. When you are out all day, visiting sights, buying gifts and souvenirs and paying entrance fees, eating out every night may break the bank so having a place to relax, unwind and cook your favorite dish is a big bonus in a city like London. And, if you've saved a penny or two on food you may wish to treat yourself to a seat at the Opera House in Covent garden or a show in the West End.

Whether you are in a hotel or an apartment, there is accommodation to suit most needs. The range of hotels is expansive and spread out all over London and if renting a whole apartment doesn't suit your budget, you can very often just rent a room.

And, don't forget that London isn't only about buildings and history, it has the most beautifully tended open spaces. Prepare a picnic in your kitchen and retire to St James Park, Hyde Park or Kensington Gardens (where the famous memorial to Princess Diana is situated). However, if you visit Trafalgar square, leave your picnic leftovers in a bin as feeding the pigeons is no longer acceptable.
