Get Psyched for Pushing Daisies on DVD

By: Kelly Renaul

Pushing Daisies is an American television dramedy that was created by Bryan Fuller and airs on the ABC network. The show completed its first season and was picked by ABC executives for another one. The show was only able to complete nine of its schedules twenty two episodes as a result of the writers strike, so the fans have been drooling in anticipation. Fans of the show will be somewhat quenched though when the Pushing Daisies on DVD is released this summer.

Pushing Daisies centers on the life of Ned. Ned is a pie maker, but he has the strange ability to bring dead things back to life just by touching them. Just as many other talents are this one does not come without strings; there are a few conditions to this talent. The world is full of different systems of checks and balances and the talent that Ned has does not operate outside of that. He learns rather quickly that if he revives something by touching it for more than exactly one minute, then something of a similar value in life in the same vicinity dies. This provides for a form of balance in the world. Additionally, if Ned touches the thing that he brought back to life a second time, then it dies again and this is permanent. This is really bad because then it means that he has inadvertently killed two things.

In the very first episode, which is also referred to as the pilot, Ned discovers his gift when he is a gift by reviving his Golden Retriever, Digby, after he is hit by a truck. A little later on in life he brings his mom back to life after she dies from an aneurysm. However, by bringing his mother back to life, he accidentally kills the father of his childhood sweetheart, Charlotte Chuck Charles. This goes back to the form of checks and balances that apply to this talent that Ned possesses. The situation gets much worse though when Neds mother falls dead again when she comes to give him a goodnight kiss, and this time it is permanent. Ned is devastated and on top of his own grief, Chuck is pulled away from him forever when her agoraphobic aunts, Vivian and Lily, move in to care for her. Ned ends up being shipped away to a very lonely boarding school by his father. This show caught on from the very first episode and it is clear if you watch an episode, why Pushing Daisies on DVD is in such high demand.
